Peugeot's cv activities, confined for many years to car derivatives and the front-wheel drive J7 range, were demonstrated on many of the bodybuilders' stands at Paris, with exhibits showing the flair the French have for getting the best out of this drive-line layout.

IVECO's own French domestic partner, UNIC, presented a "pendant" range complementary to the other IVECO marques. Although considerable efforts are now being undertaken in the field of air deflector development — several of the IVECO exhibits featured this type of energy-saving cab roof equipment — the design of such fitments varies considerably. Even the four different examples mounted on Berliet/Saviem tractive units'and shown by one manufacturer, SSV, appeared to have given more thought to aesthetics than towards achieving practical results.

Volvo used the show to present the full Model programme now completed by the introduction of the F7 and F6S vehicles. Though not to be marketed in the UK, the F 615 is another addition to the Volvo range using the new all-steel safety cab. The engine fitted is the TD 60 B developing 180bhp at 2,800 rpm.

Two important developments on the Scania stand included the up-rated LT 146 chassis — at the exhibition in tipper guise for a gvw of 36 tonnes but also to be marketed as a heavy haulage machine — and the introduction of an improved cab suspension. This comprises helical spring mountings with hydraulic shock absorbers to provide a better ride quality for short wheelbase tractors and for rigids mainly working over poor roads.

Hino, one of three Japanese makers established on the French market, announced the introduction of two additional models into Europe, the LA for a gvw of 11 tonnes and the KY, a 19-tonner. Smallest of the Japanese cv exhibits, the Honda Acty, was also shown as a minitipper with a JCM dropside body.

Major psv developments were disclosed by DAF, Heuliez, Neoplan and Van Hool. The DAF SB 2000 DHR rear-engined chassis introduced at Amsterdam in the spring is now being offered with a charge-cooled DHU 825 engine as alre used in the DAF truck ra The turbo-charged 169 power unit is said to repre the first application of cha cooling to a psv engine.
