ANUMBER of improvements in the Bedford range of vehicles has been introduced in recent months. Servicing of -the servo unit of the hydraulic brakes on the Big Bedford and Middle: ,peight range of vehicles has been simplified by replacing the monobloc cast -unit by one having a replaceable
pressed-aluminium cylinder.
The compression ratio has been increased from 6.3 to I to 6.8 to 1 by fitting a modified cylinder head. Brake horse-power has been raised to about 115 and the torque to approximately 238 lb.-ft. The performance is even livelier and Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., claim that the petrol consumption has been improved.
On drop-sided bodies the floor is now completely flat. The outer boards are recessed to accommodate the sideretaining plates, which are flush with the floor.
Micrometer adjustment is provided for the ignition setting on petrolengined models, so that optimum results can be obtained according to the fuel used. All petrol-engined models have Delco oil-filled coils.
A modification affecting only the the middleweight range is that the position of the driver's scat has been altered to give improved forward vision.
The compression ratio of the engine in the 10-12-cwt. van has been raised from 6.4 to 1 to 6.8 to 1 to yield better performance and lower fuel-consumption. A Zenith VIG7 carburetter is fitted.
The worm-and-peg-follower steering gear has been replaced by one of the Burman recirculating-ball type. Not only does this new steering gear reduce effort in manceuvring, but it is lighter and more positive in action.
Improvements in body sealing and provision for fitting a heater and deicing unit are further modifications carried out to the van.
The water pump has a more efficient seal which is carried in a pressed-rubber housing.
