Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE new Ilydracrane mobile unit shown by F. Taylor and Sons (Manchester). Ltd., Salford, 6, at the Mechanical Handling Exhibition, Earls Court, London, employs hydraulic power both for craning and drive to the road wheels. The Ford 4D industrial oil engine drives hydraulic pumps feeding both the rams and motors for the crane mechanism, and a Dowty 11-Ydrostatic final-drive unit at the rear wheels.

Hydraulic power steering is fitted, and the crane on display is equipped with a hydraulically operated 1f-cu.-yd. grab.

Two British-built machines are shown for the first time by the Caterpillar Tractor Co., Ltd., Glasgow. The 955F Trascavator heavy-duty digger and loader has a new oil engine delivering 70 h.h.p. at the flywheel and giving a speed range of 1.6-5.6 m.p.h. forward and 1.9-5.3 m.p.h. in reverse.

A four-cylindered oil engine powers the latest series C D4 crawler tractors. Both D4 models shown are fitted with bulldozer blades, whilst one has a Hyster winch and an integral logging arch.

An American-designed tractor shovel is now being built in this country by the Yale and Towne Manufacturing Co., Wednesfield, Staffs. It is known as the model 154 and can lift 12,000 lb. to 10 ft. 10 in. in 8 seconds.

The shovel, which has large-diameter tyres of equal size and a forward driving position, is powered by the Leyland UE 0.350 industrial oil engine coupled to a transmission incorporating a torque converter.

W. C. Youngman, Ltd., Crawley, Sussex, show two new developments which assist in the towing of long trains of small trucks. Their Slalom truck has a single centrally mounted axle and single castors on the centre line at each end.

When the Slalom is used as a hand trolley, the castors swing freely, but when employed in a train the action of the castors is governed by the long, rigid towbars to give near-perfect tracking without cutting corners.

Youngman show also a novel automatic coupling device to link the tractor to the leading trailer in the train. Uncoupling is effected from the driving position.
