T TNDER the name of the Lumen, k_.) a useful little. workshop device has just been brought out in France to facilitate piston-ring fitting. Like so many useful inventions, this one is perfectly simple, but it is capable of rendering genuine service not only in the reduction of labour costs but in avoiding the deformation of piston rings, especially in the case of large-diameter pistons.

The Lumen device consists of a semi-circular holder with four slots., into which the rings are inserted and thereafter are 'turned around until all the breaks come opposite to the opening mechanism. The -lastnamed consists of a pair of expanding jaws, operated by a squarethreaded screw. When the jaws are opened the piston is dropped into place; the jaws are then released again.
