• Road congestion is costing every British household around 210 a week, warns CBI director-general John Banham. He says the congestion is the consequence of inadequate planning and investment.

• Richard Llewellyn has been voted chairman of the RHA's Young Executive Section. Membership has risen from 40 to 142 during the past year: Llewellyn takes over from Mark Currie.
Giltpack deal
▪ Wincanton Distribution Services has won a fiveyear contract with Southampton-based Giltpackto distribute its packaging products around the UK. WDS has taken conrol of Giltpack's fleet of eight rigids and one attic, and will supply the drivers.
Safe doors
• Doors on London's 4,000 driver-only buses are to be replaced by new safety doors if trials with a system built by Overton prove successful.
A spokeswoman for London Buses says the Overton system is proving more successful in trials than previous systems: if the scheme goes ahead it will cost London Buses around £3m.
Third route
• Eurotunnel might build a third, freight-only Channel Tunnel. Progress on the present Channel Tunnel excavations is improving, with 13km completed by the end of March, but the scheduled completion date has still been put back a month to 15 June 1993.
