• Kassbohrer and Neoplan are among European truck and bus manufacturers which are breaking into the huge Chinese market.
Assembly of Kassbohrer 200 Series coaches is about to begin at the FHAW works in Hefei, in the south-eastern province of Anhui. This plant already builds 2,000 Steyr trucks a year under licence. Funding for the deal has been secured as one of 60 co-operation projects recently authorised with Western industry.
The 300th Neoplan-licensed tourist coach was recently completed as part of a joint venture signed with Norinco in 1987. This deal is on course to produce 400 coaches in 1994, eventually rising to 1,500 a year. Some vehicles have been exported to Hong Kong and South America; Norinco plans to expand into other Far East countries.
China has a predicted demand for up to 40,000 vehicles a year.
