£200,000 claim • Welsh tipper boss Jeff
MI Former United Transport International chief executive Richard Dawbarn reached an out-of-court settlement with his former employer last week following the termination of his contract in March.
Dawbarn, 56, was pursuing a claim of more than £200,000 against UTI for unfair and wrongful dismissal after 31 years of service. The terms of the settlement are confidential, but Dawbarn says he is "satisfied" with the deal.
"This was settled on an amicable basis on both sides and is all done and dusted," says Dawbarn, who is now planning to get back into the transport industry UTI's parent company BET declines to comment on the case. Cadwallader plans to convert his fleet to 45 contract-hire vehicles by next summer to free the company from the demands of in-house maintenance.
Cadwallader, managing direc tor of Pontypridd-based Cadwallader Transport Services, does not expect that ending his 20-year policy of buying trucks will cut costs immediately. But he says he will benefit from time saved on maintenance to concen trate on his core haulage business.
"The financial benefits of contract hire are off-balanced by not having a truck to sell at the end of the agreement," says Cadwallader, who currently operates 30 trucks. Tut it takes the pressure off me having to spend time on maintenance, sorting out invoices, parts and vehicle checks."
He will not comment on the future of the firm's four fitters.
