Mason's taxi had been much in demand, but, so far as tips went, the evening had been a dud. When a prosperous-looking couple bailed him from the steps of Romano's, he felt sure his luck had turned ; but it o'clock found him outside a Hampstead mansion clutching his fare, plus 2d., and by no means speechless with indignation.
" Steady there, mate," admonished a passing con ' stable. You taxi-drivers " " I'm no taxi-driver," shouted Mason. I'm a blinkin' carpenter, that's wot I am. I've spent the 'ole blistered evenin' drivin' screws."
