FLEET consolidation at five Scottish bases and additional maintenance capacity were sought by Road Services (Forth), Ltd., before the Scottish Licensing Authority at Glasgow last week.

Mr. Andrew Dunn, managing director, told Mr. W. F. Quin, the Licensing Authority, that there had been tremen dous expansion of.businesS in the Central Scotland area where their bases were mainly located. They had 170 vehicles at these depots in January, 1958. Two vehicles on Special A licence were pur chased in February, 1959, and in March they added seven more from a' wholly. owned subsidiary. -In.Octobeik, 1959, they purchased six vehicles on A 'licences and two more articulated vehicles had been allowed recently. .

. -Their fleet 'was now 165 in the area, bit. despite its full operation,'Substantial

Contracting and the issue of substitutions; they‘Vere still hard pressed. They.

now sought to .consolidate and organize their vehicles over the appropriate bases, and -to add a sufficient number to provide " the, type of service required by their customers.

At 'Falkirk they sought the present

number of vehicles, plus one articulated-unit and a semi-trailer.In that area they.

had been obliged to seek 55 -temporary substitutions in 1959 as against eight in 1958._ An assurance was given that the company did not plan. to act as a cleatinghouse.

Normal user would be 15 per cent. Central and North East Scotland, 85 per cent. England.

For Denny, where they have three articulated vehicles plus trailers, they sought one additional articulated vehicle and articulated trailer; normal user Central and North East Scotland 40 per cent., England oo per cent.

For Alloa they sought a similar addition; normal user Central, ,North East and South East Scotland, 20 per cent., England, 80 per cent, For Stirling, a small depot, they were asking no extra vehicles; normal user Central and North East

D4 Scotland, 80 per cent., England 20 per cent.

For Glasgow, they asked two collection and delivery vehicles to supplement the six vehicles now linking up with their other depots. About 30 to 40 per cent. of the work would be collection and delivery.

Mr. J. Law, for James Hemphill, Ltd., withdrew objections on an assurance that Road Services (Forth), Ltd., were not anticipating any major increase in bulk liquid transport beyond the present traffic handled in this category.

For British Railways and British Road .Service.s, Mr. Howitt expressed concern at the proposal to put on two light vans in Glasgow. He did not challenge the normal' user proposals but pointed out that there was no evidence at all to support the Glasgow claim. He also questioned' whether the maintenancerequirement needs had been proved and were justification for the additional articulated outfits wanted,

Mr. Quin reserved decision, pointing Out that be would require" to consider the evidence submitted in detail. He also expressed some doubt as to the Glasgow application and indicated that he would require to review the claim there especially.
