In Production: The new Firestone factory at Alcochete, 10 miles from Lisbon, is now producing tyres for the Portuguese market. Annual production capacity is expected to reach 120,000 tyres and tubes.

Trams To Bases': Two tram services using Great Western Road, Glasgow, will he replaced by buses on Sunday. The final tram service using that road will be withdrawn on June 5, and a further service will give way to buses on November 6.

Long-service Awards: With the presentation of long-service awards to four persons last week, thetotal number of employees of the Michelin Tyre Co., Ltd., with 40 years' service reached 29. Awards to workers with 25 years' service have been made to 543 employees.

Grade 1 Wanted: The chief fire officer of South Shields is again trying to make the central purchasing committee buy grade l petrol for his vehicles. Commercial-grade petrol, he says, is " totally unsuitable ' for modern, engines, which, in fire brigade service, operate under damp conditions and in variations of temperature.

EXCISE TAX SUMS GIVEN L'STIMATED Excise tax paid last year in respect of 50,924 B-licensed and 12,169 contract A -licensed vehicles weighing between 1+-3 tons was £1.4m. and £400,000 respectively. The duty paid for vehicles of over 3 tons was Vm. for 14,894 under B licence and Elm. for 12,957 under contract-A licence. Revenue from fuel and licence duty on 73,268 hackney vehicles was about £30m.
