MAN-VW has made nine of its 157 British employees redundant in response to the recession.
Marketing services manager Mike Heathwise told CM that the redundancies affect all areas of the company's activities, including marketing, sales, service, and training, but he would not be drawn on the reasons why particular employees' jobs have gone.
British sales of MAN-VW products, includng the MT-Series
medium weight vehicles, fell in the first two months of this year from 1980's 1,292 to 811, a drop of 37 per cent, while VW light van sales fell by 42 per contr from 1208 to 743.
Mr Heathwise thought there were signs of "life in the corpse" in the light vehicle market, but the heavy end, he said, is still showing all the signs of a depressed market.
But, while he asserted the company had to react radically to these circumstances, and some dealers were offering preferential terms to clear unsold stocks, he insisted there was no question of MAN-VW itself initiating such practices.
