AM SURE that there will be iany of your readers who work for local authorities who will deeply resent the inferences contained in your editorial of March 7.
There are many local authorities who will increase their rates this year by less than 20 per cent, rather than the 25 per cent to 50 per cent stated in your editorial.
I happen to work for an authority that is to increase its rate by 9.7 per cent.
Your statement that road hauliers could take over local authorities' road transport, do it better, and do it more cheaply is an insult to numerous local authority professionals, and I wonder on what grounds you make this outspoken assumption.
Certainly let the private sector challenge for local authority transport activities; we are all watching the Southend experiment with great interest. But please don't make such illinformed comment as to suggest that local authorities do not have their own pool of talent and expertise; they have, and many local authorities' transport activities are highly efficient.
