It seems that the world and his wife have written to the Minister for Transport expressing views on the Transport Policy consultative document. If CM's mail is anything to judge by, all but a predictable few agree that a traffic switch from road to rail is now no more than a pipe dream. And you can't run a country on pipe dreams.

The Government has got very clear answers to its document — expand road transport, build more roads, establish lorry routes. It could, however, even yet be persuaded to take a different course.

Peter Parker, British Rail's new supremo, will almost certainly try to halt the erosion of his new empire. Good luck to him in his efforts, but only if he applies his very considerable commercial ability in the endeavour.

Now that the industry — and indeed the country — has had the opportunity to express itself, it is essential that it does not allow its opinions to be ignored or -shouted downby the small but vociferous and frequently uncommercial rail lobby.
