A Peugeot Light Model

A WELL-TRIED type of vehicle of I. small capacity is the 5-cwt Peugeot; it has had several years service in Great Britain and in its country of origin, France. It has found a ready market for all classes of work and Peugeot (England), Ltd., 75, Edgier Road, Fulham, London, S.-W.6, has sold a good number of the type.

In the past the majority of these machines has been fitted with van bodies, but a lorry body can now be supplied for other claSses of transport activity. In either case the price is £135 complete. The annual tax is £10, as the weight is under 12 cwt. Recent improvements in the chassis specification include the provision of five lamps in place of the three formerly supplied, and four-wheel brakes are included. By a modification in design the clutch is now placed in a very accessible position under the bonnet, the base of the dashboard being well above the flywheel and somewhat to the rear of it.

A 605 c.c. four-cylindoted engine of 51 rum. bore and 85 mm. stroke is employed, this having side-by-side valveS, aluminium pistons, thermosiphon cooling and a ,Solex carburetter. Ignition is by a barrel-type magneto, mounted on the

near side of the engine, the distributor being inclined outward for accessibility. The dynamo ig driven by the same belt as the fan and charges a 6-volt battery of 45 amp.-hours capacity.

A dry single-plate clutch is coupled by a short shaft to the main propeller shaft, which is enclosed ; a metal disc and a fabric-dise coupling are used at the front and rear respectively of the former shaft. The three-speed gearbox forms part of the rear-axle assembly ; the gear ratios are 28.2 to 1, 13.1 to 1, and 7.25 to 1, reverse being 23 to I. Final drive is by underslung worm.

The four-wheel brakes operate in 7-in. drums; as a transverse front spring is used a pressed-steel V-shaped member is fitted to the front axle—and hinged below the cross-member carrying the torque ball—to locate the axle. Quarter-elliptic springs are used at the rear. The speedometer is driven from the axle-gearbox.

In the case of the new lorry body the floor space is 3 ft. 10 ins. by 3 ft. 10i ins. The sides and tailboard are hinged. The wheelbase of the chassis used for both van and lorry is 7 ft. 6 ins., the overall length 11 ft. 3 ins. and the track 3 ft. 6 ins. Both vehicles have an overall width of 4 ft. 3 ins., whilst the van height is 6 ft.

Comfortable cabs are provided for both bodies. In the case of the van the driver's seat is built inside the main portion of the body ; the seat to the left of the driver can be removed and stowed away to allow the carrying of lengthy poles or other burdens, the space being available on the left-hand side..
