• Brilliant driving in the run-off gave R. L. V. Smith a well-deserved success in the Driver of the Year competition run by Harold Wood and Sons Ltd at the West Riding Fire Service headquarters at Birkenshaw on Sunday. He had qualified by driving a 24-ton rigid tanker in the heats but like others in the final drove an ERF artic.
Other finalists were J. Mainwaring and R. Garside. Both Smith and Mainwaring were members of the Widnes depot contingent which annexed the team award with 533 penalty points. Heckmondwike were second with 702. Mr. J. B. Wild presented awards to the winners.
