Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Saviem J-Series comprises three basic models of 9, 11 and 13 tonnes gross vehicle weight. The range will be available on the French market during the first half of '75 and from then it will be extended to other export markets "in forms adapted to the requirements for each of these markets".

Obviously, being part of the Club consortium much of the technical specification is identical to that of the DAF range already covered in detail in Commercial Motor, but there are several significant differences.

Vehicle dimensions

The three basic models are designated the JN 90, JP 11 and JP 13 with the latter being subdivided into 13A, B and C.

The JN 90 is a light truck with a gvw of 9 tonnes and a gtw of 12.5 tonnes for which various wheelbases are available from 2.7 to 5.05m (8ft 10in to 16ft 7in). The JP 11 models include wheelbases from 2.85 to 5.2 m (9ft 4in to 17ft I in) for a gvw of 11 tonnes and a gtw of 14.5 tonnes. The JP 13 range is more complicated as engine options are available as well as dimensional ones.

NA or TC options

The power units for the various Club vehicles are no included in the joint cc operation. It is up to the in dividual manufacturer t, select the engine and Savier is in the happy position c having suitable units in it existing range thu eliminating the need fo shopping around. The 79 and 798 engines fitted to th J-series have been standar, equipment in the Savier SM 7 and SM8 models fo some years, and both featur the MAN M-injectio system.

The 797 engine is an ir line six-cylinder unit whic develops 112 kW (150 bh SAE rating), at 2900 rpr from a cubic capacity of 5.4 litres (335cu in). The torqu output is 402Nm (2971b fi at 1700rpm. The 797 is naturally aspirated unit i contrast to the highe powered 798 which is turbocharged version of th same engine. The use of blower raises the power t 127 kW (170 bhp) and th torque to 454Nm (355 lb ft Although the 797 and 79 engines have been use, before on Saviem vehiclet various modifications wer made before their fitting t theJ series. For example, th fan is now crankshal mounted. The fuel pump i of the rotary type with built-in automatic advance Saviem has taken great ains to protect the engine in usty operating conditions Lich as those encountered in uikling sites with the proision of two seperate fuel lters.

The initial filter is at the ink outlet with a double lter on the engine itself. The ir filter is equipped with a )uling indicator which 'arns the driver by means of light, on the instrument and. The drive from the engine is transmitted through a single dry-plate diaphragm clutch.

One gearbox is standard for all the J series models the S 5.35 type from ZF which is a fully synchronized five-speed unit. The gear linkage is telescopic and does not need disconnecting when tilting the cab. This arrangement similar to that found on the new Mercedes-Benz cab also eliminates the need for a hole in the cab floor for the gear lever to allow tilting. The single reduction rear axle is a "Club" component with an electropneumatically operated diff lock as standard equipment on the .113 II and 13 models.

Steering and suspension

The suspension is by leafspring with dampers from and rear. Saviem has specified long-leaf springs in conjunction with anti-roll bars which they claim will provide a comfortable ride for the driver while adapt ing to the vehicle load.

Worm-and-nut steering is common to the whole range with hydraulic power assistance — standard on the JP 13 available as an optional extra on the JN 90 and JP II.

Club cab

The pressings for the cab are made by Heuliez in France from Club-owned tools. The cabs for the Jseries arc assembled by Saviem whereas the cabs for the other three members are assembled by Magirus Deutz at Ulm. The J-series cab is designated the type 870 and tilts to 520 for component access.
