Four services axed

OUR SERVICES were vithdrawn by Freightliners _.td on Monday this week as part of what managing lirector Mr L. W. Leppingon described as the !ompany's "continuing ,earch for profitability". The .ervices involved are Hull to vlanchester and Liverpool, -lull to Coatbridge: 3heffield to Cardiff and Swansea; and Nottingham to London.

No terminals are to be closed and a statement by Mr Leppington points out that the routes represent only a small part of the total Freightliner network. The company is introducing new services between Bristol and Coatbridge and Felixstowe and Coatbridge. One of the largest users of the services from Hull is the Metal Box Co Ltd. Its chief transport officer, Mr J. E. Elliott, told CY this week that while he understood the need for Freightliners to cover costs he was disturbed that customers had received so little notice of the closure. In this case less than three weeks had been given, including the Christmas period.

The reason for the closure of the service to Liverpool/ Manchester had undoubtedly been the opening of M62 route and Mr Elliott admitted that a major increase in Freightliner charges would have driven the company to use road transport.
