How can you afford to underquote this year wn vehicle replacement costs rising at the current rate? Stick to CN/'s rates for spot-on rate quotes.

CM'S 1979 TABLES of Operating Costs, published last week, should prove of even more value to operators than any of the previous issues. The Tables have been compiled to show how actual costs are arrived at, but in addition we are including a utilisation card for each table.

The card shows the cost of transporting consignments on vehicles covering distances from 200 to 1000 miles per week making from one to five journeys per day and at 50 and 75 per cent utilisation.

For example, an eight-ton vehicle covering 200 miles per week and making one journey per day half-loaded will cost £13.05 per ton. The same vehicle covering the same mileage and half-loaded but running on five journeys per day will cost 0.61 per ton.

To give operators the facility of an "instant-quoteservice

we are publishing a minimum charge per ton for the same mileages, journeys and utilisation. This shows that the £13.05 of cost becomes a charge of £18.27 and the £2.61 becomes £3.65. Operators are sure to find this innovation very valuable.

The Tables cover vehicles from 5cwt carrying capacity to 22 tons carrying capacity and buses and coaches on singleand two-shift working. For the firm with fleet cars, we have published three utilisation tables for three different engine sizes.

Included in the Tables are explanatory notes for newcomers on how to record then costs, a specimen vehicle costing sheet and a transport directory. We are also publishing e fuel cost calculator; this shciwE how the fuel cost per mile changes as mpg and pence pei gallon change. As example, e vehicle returning 7 mpg on fue costing 110 pence costs 15.71 pence per mile; but when fue reaches 150p per gallon, it wil cost 21.42 pence.

CM's Tables are widely usec by all sectors ot the industry 'Haulage contractors use thenaS a basis for their own calcula. tions, own-account operator use them to check against con. tract prices and insurancE brokers use them to calculate loss-of-use claims from clients.

The 1979 costs base thei depreciation charges on infla tion accounting to ensure tha the operator has made sufficien allowance to replace his vehic1( on 1985 prices rather than or today's prices. They take int( account recent Budget increase; and make allowance for spiral ling fuel prices.

They have been compiled it association with Mercedes-Ben; (UK) Ltd, Transport Consultanc Dept, who have a wide ex perience of similar compilation: in Germany.
