A very necessary equipment for users of any considerable number of commercial vehicles is a tire press. It will be recognized that the possibility of being able to change tires without sending the wheels away for the purpose is of considerable adv a ntage, especially for Overseas users.

Hollings and Guest are makers of hydraulic and screw presses for this purpose, and no fewer than 200 of its productions have been supplied during the past 2i years, practically the name of every tire cornpan y throughout the world being on the company's order books.

Some of the larger vehicle-owners have installed as many as Z.0 of the Hollins and Guest hydraulic productions in their different depots. The screw tire-presses are also manufactured for the-same purpose, and this is certainly a most suitable type for sending abroad. A special point about this press is that the bolts are screwed with rightand left-hand threads, so, that, two men working it net one against the other, and the machine, being comparatively light in construction, is not pulled about the shop when being operated. Neither is it necessary to fit holding-down bolts, so that the press can be carried from point to point if necessary. Tire blocks are also supplied by the company in all sizes, machined dead true to gauge ; these are either concave or convex, as required, to suit different methods of application. This company has gone into the matter of fuel and oil storage very considerably, and markets a complete installation working on the hydraulic principle. It must not, however, be imagined that the water used for obtaining the necessary pressure ever gets in contact with the petrol. It is claimed that the system prevents tank explosions in rase of fire; otiither lightning nor sparks can have any effecc on the fuel storage. The petrol is delivered straight from the main supply tank to the vehicle, and does not come in contact with the atmosphere during the process of travel. In connection with the plant the company supplies a meter which registers accurately any amount of fuel taken from the tanks; special meters can also be fitted provided with automatic stops, which will register and cut off any quantity of m2S fuel varying from up to 10 gallons. When the meters are once set for a specific amount, the supply is automatically cut off when that quantity has been delivered.

Imperial Motor Industries, Ltd.

Ball and roller bearings have in no small degree aided the progress of the commercial motor. Pioneers in the introduction of ball bearings for use on pleasure cars, the Hoffmann Co. has long experience which enables it to market reliable bearings, both of the roller and ball type. The up-to-date plant which this company possesses enables Hoffmann bearings to be turned out accurately to within the high limit of 1-10,000th part of an inch. Large numbers of both the ball and the roller types have been utilized in motorbuses and other public-service machines.

Kirkstall forgings need no introduction to our readers, either at Home or Overseas. The high-class quality of the steel used in the manufacture of Kirkstall axles and drop forgings is universally recognized. One of the most successful productions of the company is the Butler resilient type of built-up axle. This was evolved after considerable experiments on the part of the inventor. Its important feature is that the steels used in its construction are of such qualities as are best suited to the nature of the stresses set up. For example, the centre portion of the axle is composed of a resilient mild steel, whilst the outer ends or journals are of a quality specially suited for case-hardening and grinding. All joints are caulked over in order that the rivets cannot be subjected to avoidable stress.
