The Herbert Frood Co., Ltd.

Works : Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire. Loudon Office : Upper Rathb one Place, London, W.

The fabric known as Ferndo has proved a very efficienti ii»ing both for brakes and clutches. This composition is used extensively by the leading motorbus companies and municipal authorities throughout the world. It is also employed largely by many tramway undertakings.

If tile brake blocks are properly lined with the material, it gives most excellent results, and the composition (if the fabric very effectively dissipates the heat generated through the application of the brake.

Ferodo is made either in sheets or blocks. The latest developments of the company consist of incorporating corrugated sheet metal with the lining. This prevents any dragging taking place, and also assists radiation. The metal is fitted between the brake block and the lining. The fabric is then subjected to an extremely high hydraulic pressure, and, being suitably bonded with wire, disintegration is prevented.

Fletcher, Russell and Co., Ltd. Head Office and Works : Warrington, Lanes.

Every self-contained engineering establishment nowadays employs some form of case-hardening and brazing plant. These important operations are only carried out with the maximum degree of economy providing the plant used be of first-class manufacture.

Fletcher, Russell and Co., Ltd., specializes in this direction and markets muffle furnaces of various capacities suitable for tempering, ease-hardening, enamelling, glass-firing, etc. The concern also manufactures a special -form of brazing benchhearth.

The muffle furnaces are heated by means of liquid fuel under air pressure, and the maker states that a temperature of over 2500 F. is easily and quickly attained. The furnaces are fed with either three or four gravity-feed improved petroleum-spray burners, according to the size of the outfit.

The correct proportion of oil and air in these ovens is obtained by means of suitable valves, convenient of access. The operator is thus enabled to exercise instant and complete control over the temperature.

The brazing hearth is also heated by means of liquid fuel and air pressure. The improved type of petroleum spray burners which are fitted can be either gravity or pressure fect,

With an air pressure of 1 lb, sq. in. articles of heavy section can be quickly treated, and the iron-strapped and ribbed clay-tray bed can be readily arranged according to requirements.

The stock pattern of hearth has a table 24 ins. by 24 ins. The equipment is supplied with either one or two blowpipes as ordered.

These can be swung clear of the operator, ltaviug the table accessible for further operations. Halda Taximeter Co., Ltd.

London Office : 15, Chapel Street, Euston Road, London, N.W.

This taximeter—a Swedish production—is looked upon very favourably by users both at Home and Overseas. Eossihly this is on account of the universal adaptability of the instrument, as it can be installed on all types of motor-driven machines, including Sleighs. Many horse-cab proprietors, we learn, have also fitted the Haida.

The instrument can, of course, he supplied -to suit all kinds of tariffs, with. varying coinage and distance units. All the component parts are made within accurate limits, and the complete apparatus has passed severe tests by different licensing authorities. Mounted in a strong, non-oxidizable metal case, the recording mechanism cannot be interfered with in any way by un

Electricity is occupying an increasingly important place in the motor industry, and electrical engineers are devoting much attention to self-starters, lighting sets, and electricallyoperated recording mechanism, to say nothing of the growing interest in battery-driven machines.

The all-important factor in much of this new field is the acquisition of a satisfactory form of storage battery. Those produced by John C. Fuller and Son, Ltd., are built specially to withstand hand wear and vibration when installed on mdl types of vehicles; Fuller block accumulators can be confidently recommended for USB in all countries. The effect of vibration on a machine is only fully experienced under actual running conditions. In this respect it is important that every tool kit should include proved means for satisfactorily locking loosened nuts to prevent the possibility of their being dropped and lost on the road. Fastnut, Ltd., provides such a means in its patent washer.

This device has been tried under all sorts and conditions of vibration, and its use not only meets with the approval of the motor engineer, but collieries, railways, tramways, and many corporations use Fastnut washers exclusively. There is no drilling to be done in the shank of the bolt, and, consequently-, the washer is readily attached. It is stocked in all sizes, the smallest diameter bolt which the standard washer will accommodate being in.
