Many of the requirements of such authorities are, of course, for combined service, and necessitate the. tioishing of the vehicles in such a may as to accominedate perhaps mails, passengers and parcels, alternatively or collectively.

The Government of the Dutch East Indies employs Aibions for mail and passenger services which are' very typical of this all-round employment. A 16 h.p. Alldays and Onions Pneumatic Engineering CO, Ltd.

Head Office and Works: Matchless Works, Birmingham.

London Office: 58, Holborn Viaduct, E.C. Telegraphic Address: " .Alldays Birmingham."

A ;traightforward type of chassis which has proved so satisfactory for several of the more important branches of municipal employment is that produced by the Alldays

of Birmingham. In particular, the Aildays van has won disinction for itself in the employment of the General Post Office of Great Britain. We refer rather to the Stores Department's deliveries than to the actual carriage of mails, although, of course,Alldays machines are employed in various services throughout the country for the latter purpose. A 30-cwt. Alidays van in the employment of the G.P.O. Stores Department, during recent labour troubles in the Home Country, made some remarkable runs, and firmly esteMished itself in favour as a reselt. In three days this vehicle cavered 675 miles in 43;1 hrs, of actual running time, with a full load of 30 cwt. on board all the time.

A special direct-driven, single-acting tractor pump is installed amidships on the near side of the framing, and this can be used at will to feed the boiler when the wagon is standing, or to help the hydraulic ram situated wider the tip-wagon body. The necessary cocks for this alternative working are accessibly disposed nearby. Normally, when miming, a standard gear-driven pump, which is fitted to, all wagons of this type, looks after the feed water for the boiler. Austin Motor Co., Ltd.

Barford and Perkins, Ltd.

Head Office and Works : Queen Street Ironworks. Peterborough.

Telegraphic Address : "Barford Peterborough."

It may be truly said of the house of Barford and Perkins, Ltd., whose works are at Peterborough, that no other company in the world has had such excepticnal experience in connection with the manufacture of self-propelled motor rollers. It has specialized to a remarkable degree in this class of construction, so that at the present time its range of models is an exceptionally lengthy one, and there is practically no requirement of the road-maker or road-repairer which cannot be effectively grappled with at the Peterborough works. In general design the majority of these models conform to standard. An engine of reputed make, and with two or four cylinders, drives through a simple change-speed gearbox,

giving the same number of speeds in both directions, to a final spur-gear reduction and a single-chain drive to the rear roller.

The company has specialized in machines which have been produced for the specific purpose of Tarmac laying, and as this is so important a part of the modern road-builder's work, the production of a special machine in respect of it is an important advance. They deal with any roadway

Barford and Perkins rollers vary in gross weight from 25 cwt. to 15 tens. The narrowest is 3 ft. 6 in. over the rollers, whilst one of the latest designs is not less than 12 ft. in width. A remarkable three-axle roller has been designed specifically under the Crampton-Tapp patent "to deal with the problem of producing on a finished roadway a level or a regularly. curved surface as free as possible from the harmonic recurring waves or depressions which may occur to some extent with the ordinary two-axle roller." This machine consists essentially of three cylinders carried on three axles attached to a rigid frame, the driving or centre axle only Leiria spring-mounted. The steering of front, and back rollers is kected simultaneously by worm gearing. The total weight of the roller and water ballast, and a full ballast tank, can be increased up to 111 tons.

We write particularly of this machine in order to draw attention to the enterprise of the company, which is always evident wherever a definite demand for new models or improved methods become noteworthy. There is little need for us to say more at the present time than to advise readers in any part of the world who are interested in self-propelled rollers, fitted with internal-combustion engines, to ask this company if it can fulfil any of their specific requirements. References to users of Barford and Perkins rollers in all parts of the world are available in great number. The machines are now being put through the shops in small fleets, so great has the demand become of recent years.

The company's machines are specially adapted for export. The frame of the roller for such demand is packed in one big case, whilst the main cylinder is dispatched separately with the ends protected.

An interesting detail which has been added to recent examples is the company's new patent lifter, fitted to the hind axle. This enables the roller to raise itself out of soft places when it cannot do so in the course of an ordinary effort.

H. Gaggenau.

British Depot : Brompton Motor Co., Ltd., 78-82, Brompton Road, London, S.W.

The Benz-Gaggenau chassis is being employed to a very considerable extent on the Continent for the various recognized branches of municipal motor haulage. Over and above such machines as are employed for the cartage of ordinary street refuse, the types are used extensively with special fittings as watercarts and equipment for other street-orderly services. The Benz ambulance has been referred to under our passenger-carrying section, and we must add a word with regard to the experience of this company in the construction of motor fire-fighting plant of all kinds. These include motor pumps, self-propelled water towers and first-aid appliances.

The Benz factory has had considerable experience in the construction of tip wagons of all kinds, and we would draw attention specifically to its special designs of both end and side-tipping wagons, many of which are of large capacity. Side-tipping trailers, too, are supplied in certain instances. Belsize Motors, Ltd.

Clayton and Co. (Huddersfield), Ltd.

Head Office and Works : Union Works, Huddersfield. London Office : 68, Victoria Street, 6.W, Telegraphic Address : " Karriakar Huddersfield and London."

One of this Huddersfield maker's special claims to the attention of users is the fact that it markets, as well as its standard range of bonneted models, .a series of machines ie which the engine is located beneath the driver's foot-plate. This arrangement, it must be admitted, presents. special claims for employment with the heavier types of goods-carrying bodies which are now being so extensively purchased by municipalities and other authorities. Karrier tower-wagons are a speciality of which local corporations are making full use. , We have referred elsewhere to the company's experience in respect of tipping-wagons, and this comprises quite a number of 'special forms of this interesting class of vehicle; both power and hand-operated tips are embodied, as desired.

The Karrier patent hoisting gear for facilitating the leading of bulky or heavy units is a useful addition to many chassis.

It is interesting to note that this company has, a short time 'before the preparation of this special issue, been successful with its new British W.O. subsidy-typo model with a, nominal three-ton load capacity' and lies been granted a certificate for it after a series of trials which, if anything, were much more severe than previous ones of the same type. This success is high testimony to the suitability of Karrier vehicles for municipal and Governmental employment.

Commercial Cars, Ltd.

Works : Luton, Beds. London Office : 79a, Parkhurst Road, Holloway, N. Telegraphic Addresses : " Komerkars Luton and London."

Commercial Cars, Ltd., has had exceptional experience in respect of the supply of machines for municipal and Government employment at home and abroad. We would refer our readers to the notice under the present heading in section B ter certain detailed comment upon the capacity and construction of this company's standard chassis. In the present section we will ecasfine ourselves to the recording of a few interesting orders which have recently been fulfilled.

The Street Cleansing and Scavenging Department of the City of Edmonton, Alberta. recently took delivery of one of the company's P.C.-type chassis fitted with sprinkling and flushing gear. This is a watering-wagon, of course, and the tank has a capacity of 1000 imperial gallons. In addition to Warwick patent sprinklers, the machine is fitted with flush -Mg nozzles, which can be arranged at. any inclination for Use

in layingthick dust, or for flushing out gullies. • A Mather and Platt centrifugal pump is fitted behind the driver's seat, and this discharges the water through any of the flushing nozzles on to the road surface or elsewhere at a pressure of 60 lb. per sq. in. This particular machine, it is interesting to note, is fitted with a Biddlecombe paraffin gas producer.

The company's Winnipeg agent recently took delivery of a Commercar chassis for special fire-brigade purposes. The vehicle in question, on what is known as an F.C.B. chaesis, was fitted with an American sheet-steel body for carrying 2000 ft. of fire-hose. One of the conditions of the contract for supply was that the machine should be capable of attaining, a speed of 44 m.p.h.; and in the official test this was exceeded by 6 m.p.h. with full load up.

One of the most remarkable moter fire-engines as yet constructed in this country is undoubtedly the 120 h.p. standard Commercar six-cylinder fire-pump, which has beer, built to the order of the Corporation of Vancouver. This was described and illustrated in full in a recent issue of THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR. A similar machine, built with body and equipment, has recently been ordered by the municipality of the City of Prince Albert, Alberta.

We may finally quote, as an example of the ability of Con, roercial Cars, Ltd., to undertake the supply of these special municipal types, an order which has recently been fulfilled for the Municipality of Monte Video for an 860-gallon waterlog wagon fitted with the Willacy patent rotary sprinkling gea .

This company has an unusual number of special vehicles to its credit which can be classified specifically as useful for municipal purposes. Primarily, of course, it has distinguished itself by the manner in which it has developed the motor fire-engine. So well have these vehicles come through the many strenuous tests to which they have been put by professional firemen and fire-brigade committees, the world over, that, up to the present time, motor pumps and first-aid tenders from the Guildford shops are being dispatched to all quarters of the globe in record numbers.

The company preudly takes rank as the pioneer of the Dennis-Gwynne turbine motor fire-engine. There has been some amount of opposition to the turbine on the part of users who at first thoeght that a reciprocating engine would give better service, but it is now pretty well admitted on all hauds that the turbine is the most suitable form of pump for the purpose. The Dennis form of construction, therefore, finds particular favour in fire-brigade circles everywhere, at the present time. The Greek Government has acquired a Dennis tank-wagon to carry 500 gallons of water for fire-brigade purposes between Athens and Piraeus. This machine is of the40 h.p. type, and constructed to carry, excluding body, a load of fivo tons.

The company, of course, ha.s had much experience in the production of motor ambulances, and notably ie the case of the Metropolitan Ambulance Board, which has adopted a large fleet of Dennis single-deckers for this class of work.

Four three-ton wagons of similar type are now on order for the Crown Agents for the Colonies, and these machines are also to have steel-built bodies.

A useful example of the company's incursion into the field of motor fire-engine construction is a 32 h.p. motor fire tender with escape, machines of which type have already been supplied to Sidcup and Chatham in the Home Country.

Halley's Industrial Motors, Ltd. Head Office and.Works : Yoker, Glasgow. London Office : 36, Causton Street, Westminster, S.W. Telegraphic Address : " Horseless Glasgow." S.P.A. models, handled by this company, have been adapted for use in various municipal services, and notably for employment as light and speedy tower wagons tor overhead tramway equipment. The company manufactures in its own shops at Leeds two specialities which are of particular interest to those who contemplate further employment of power-pro. pelled plant for municipal purposes.

Just before going to press with this present issue, we. were afforded an opportunity to inspect the latest design of Green motor-propelled road sweeper, and this appliance impressed us as a straightforward and effective model. The latest design is fitted with a four-cylinder engine and patented method of chassis suspension as between frame and brush gear. Green's other speciality, which has many other adaptations, of course, than those necessitated by municipal service, is the motor-propelled roller, and this is made in a. number of sizes. A sturdy arid substantial engine drives through a gearbox giving a ratio of speeds which is available in either direction, and thence, by big spur-gear reduction to the final chain drive, to the rear roller.
