Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AFTER MUCH "Will they? Won't they?" deliberating, Commercial Motor can reveal that DaimlerChrysler (UK) will be bringing a light-weight eightlegger into the UK specifically aimed at the nation's weightconscious tipperrnen.

But operators keen to get their hands on one will be disappointed to learn that the earliest it could appear is next summer, with a January 2006 launch looking increasingly likely.

Although DC (UK) currently offers a V6-powered Actros 8x4 in right-hand drive, its hefty kerbweight means that it remains limited to muckaway work. However, as expected, a lighter 8x4 will have the cab from the Atego/Axor range and the 0M457 12litre in-line six that powers RHD Axor tractors.

While the German truck maker is remaining characteristically tight-lipped over the final specification of its new 8x4 it will face a tough decision whether to launch it in time for the current Euro-3 emission regs, or to wait for the Euro-4 regs.

Going with the later deadline of 2006 would mean it would have to fit a more complicated, albeit cleaner engine, although the extra wait may give DC (UK) more time to ensure its driveline spec matches UK aspirations 100%.

That could include lighter singlereduction axles: the Actros has heavier hub reduction units. An 8x4 Atego would join DC (UK)'s Atego-based 2528 and 2633 sixwheelers which have already proved popular with UK mixer and aggregate fleets.
