YOUR YARDSTICK report's conclusion that driver vacancies dropped last quarter seems out of line with national statistics (CM 26 August). Figures for the number of vacancies notified to UK job centres for HGV drivers in 2004 have been greater than the corresponding month for 2003 on six out of seven occasions. The most recent figure, for July 2004, was the highest in the past two years. Also, the annual total of notified vacancies, which ignores seasonal variations, has been increasing steadily since it could first be calculated in April 2003.

Steve Wells Research & innovation manager Skills for Logistics Editor's reply: Thanks for that valuable comment on the current skills shortage. As we state in Yardstick, the Michelin research CM publishes is intended as a snapshot only and in this case may have been slightly skewed because it did not focus on large firms. However, the fact remains that out of the 200 firms we canvassed, only 31% of operators had driver vacancies.
