• An injured driver's life was saved last week by the prompt action of two locals who pulled him away from a blazing vehicle following a crash which claimed the fife of another driver.

The collision between two artics at 04:30hrs caused the death of Kevin Kelly, whose truck carried bread, and seriously injured Edward O'Halloran, whose load was steel girders.

O'Halloran was thrown from his cab by the collision but lay trapped beneath burning wreckage with broken limbs until father and son Liam and James O'Meara arrived to drag him to safety The rescuers placed a blanket over the injured driver until emergency services arrived.

Both trucks were gutted in the blaze; initial reports suggest that Kelly died on impact.

A full police investigation has been launched into the cause of the accident.
