k by Melanie Hammond

The slogan "Don't strangle Britain's lifeline'' will be one of the key messages of the Freight Transport Association's advertising campaign.

The campaign. which is planned to stop the Government's fuel duty escalator, will also feature a hard-hitting illustration of a truck, emblazoned with a Union Jack, hanging in the noose of a fuel pump.

It kicks off next week with adverts in the national press and on billboards at more than 500 sites nationwide.

The FTA's campaign will continue until the next Budget with the main thrust between now and November.

The Elm exercise will be launched with a £500.000 contribution from the FTA but it is anticipated that the remainder will be made up by £1,000 donations from hauliers.

HA director-general David Green declines to name the companies which have pledged support so far but says: "We have already received some significant sums of money and offers of financial support."
