• Drivers in Wigan and Chorley, Lancs could be in line for a work bonanza if plans for a new quarry get the go-ahead.
Durham-based H J Banks has submitted plans to extract 1.2 million tonnes of gravel, coal and sand from a site at Rigby House Farm, Adlington. Once exhausted, it would be used for landfill.
Up to 176 lorry movements a day are expected once the site is fully operational with 88 units needed on Saturdays: work won't start until next spring.
"We are likely to be looking for coal articulated tippers and fixed tippers in the Wigan area as our own transport operations are based in the north east," says the company's environmental manager, Mark Dowdall.
