• Massive environmental opposition in South Wales to a licence bid by England Environmental has led to its adjournment until the end of September, when a special day will be set aside for the case to be heard.
The company is seeking a new national licence for nine vehicles and five trailers, based at Pwll-y Darren, Welsh Street Donats, Cowbridge, to replace a licence currently held by England Bros. The application was opposed by South Glamorgan County Council and Vale of Glamorgan District Council. Thirty neighbouring residents in Aberthin had also written letters of protest, but they had been received after the expiry date for valid representations against the application. For the county council, Paul Carter said the application involved an increase in vehicle authorisation. The council's objection was on the grounds that the site, which lay in a rural area, was unsuitable and that residents would be adversely affected by noise.
Adjourning the proceedings after being told that the hearing would be very long, South Wales Deputy Traffic Commissioner Gerrard Sullivan said he proposed making no ruling at this stage about whether the letters from the residents would be considered.
