Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE MERSEY Docks and Harbour Company have won support from Merseyside County Council for a new plan to build a Freightliner terminal at Royal Seaforth Dock, Liverpool. An application for a government grant is expected to be made shortly.

Liverpool City Council's policy and finance committee have also backed the plan on the grounds it would end lorry traffic between the existing Freightliner terminal at Garston and Royal Seaforth.

Sefton District Council is also being asked to support the application.

A site for a Freightliner terminal was earmarked at Seaforth when the new E50million Dock was built seven years ago. This is at present being used as a car park and trailer park at the head of the new dock. Talks between the Dock company and local authority officials have been held in the last two weeks and, if the council lends its support, an application for money under section eight of the Railways Act 1974 will go forward to the Department of the Environment.

"We will not be making an application until we know that we have the support of the local authorities," a Mersey Docks and Harbour Company spokesman said. "If we get the support we will have a basis for going ahead with an application."

A Liverpool City Planning Committee spokesman said they would welcome the construction of the terminal • because it would end the flow of lorries between the Freightliner terminal at Garston and Seaforth — a distance of about 12 miles — through the city centre a residential areas.

About nine months agt new railhead, built with the of a section eight grant v established at the Aint Containerbase, sited abt three miles from the Ro Seaforth Dock.
