n ARLINGTON Corporation Transport Manager, Mr. William Mayes, has urged the Corporation to make a bigger contribution from the general rates towards the cost of cheap fares for elderly people and children. Mr. Mayes claims that these cost the undertaking about £21,000 annually, but the Borough Treasurer, Mr. W. Nuttall, says the cost is only £6,200.
A recommendation by Mr. Nuttall that the contribution from the rates should be £9,000 has been adopted by the Finance Committee, but the matter will be reviewed when the 1967-8 estimates are being considered, Mr. Mayes is recommending that elderly people paying 2d. a journey should in future pay children's fares.
