A POLICY of expansion in the _ field PA of road haulage has been decided upon by Coast Lines, Ltd., Mr, F. R. Hooker, secretary, told The Commercial Motor on Tuesday. "No specific aCquisitions have been settled on at the moment, but we are looking around," he said.
In the annual report Capt. A. S. Nutting stated that the company's road haulage undertakings had profited during 1959 by the improved trading in the country generally. A marked improvement was noted in the fortunes of the company during the second half of 1959, but Strikes in June and July, this year, had caused heavy financial losses, he added.
ONE-MAN-BUS STRIKE
IFTY-FIVE drivers and conductors at the Cinderford depot of Red and White Services, Ltd., came out on strike this week. They object to the company's decision to introduce five one-man buses to the depot, for use on the quieter routes. The men say that this will cause redundancy among the conducting • staff.
Meetings between management and workers' representatives from Cinderford failed to produce a settlement. One-man buses have been in use at the Lydney and Ross-on-Wye depots for many"months.
The Cinderford men have rejected an offer by the company to postpone the scheme for a week to enable further negotiations to take place.
FIRE AT HALIFAX GARAGE
FIRE at Halifax highways department's Cpmmercial Road garage last Sunday wrecked the buildings, destroyed three dumpers and two Chasesicle mechanical shovels, and caused many thousands of pounds' damage. The cause is not yet known.
