AN outstanding feature of two Ruston Bucyrus exc. a v a ti rig ma chi nes supplied to the Shell Petroleum Co., Ltd., is their high degree of mobility. This has been achieved by mounting the Ruston-Bucyrus superstructure on Scammell Constructor 6 x 6 Chassis powered by the RollsRoyce C6NFL, six-cylindered, 12.17litre normally aspirated oil engine.

This unit produces 1610 h.h.p. at 1.800 r.p.m. and as there are 12 forward gear ratios and the back-axle ratio is 10.25 to 1, the traction potential of the vehicle is ample for the most arduous work. Separate propeller shafts are employed for the drive •to the three axles..

Both machines will be operated by the British Malayan Petroleum Co., Ltd., in Seria, and will be used as mobile cranes, for hat-idling stone and other materials with .a clamshell attachment and for dragline operations.

As the units can be moved from one site to another, at much higher speed than is normal with this type of equipment, savings will be effected in both time and money.

RUSSIAN LORRIES "EXTREMELY UNPOPULAR"

licp• USS1AN ZIS lorries, of which several are being used in Afghanistan by the Ministry of Public Works, are proving "extremely unpopular," according to a Board of Trade report. Not only are they of weak construction, but they are under-powered and have a high petrol consumption. As a result, they can be used only in the flatter parts of Afghanistan."

Lorries of a certain American make which have been supplied in large quantities are running into difficulties through bodywork failures. The reason is that the vehicles are usually "hopelessly overloaded.
