TRAFFIC carried by road transport 1 contractors in the United States increased consistently from 1944 until last year, whilst the railways' share of goods hauled declined.
In 1944, of the total revenue earned for goods carried by rail and inter-city road operators, 3.45 per cent, was gained by the latter. Last year the corresponding proportion was 6.27 per cent. Relative figures for passenger transport were 21.96 per cent. and 36.44 per cent.
These statistics were compiled in relation to road hauliers operating under the U.S. Interstate Commerce Commission and do not refer to goods carried by ancillary and non-regulated operators. Sales of new goods vehicles have decreased this year by 10.6 per cent, compared with the 1948 figure.
