Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE ROAD HAULAGE Association believes hauliers failed to support a go-slow protest against the rise in fuel prices simply because they couldn't afford to take the tirne off.

The protest was due to clog up the Al near Gateshead last Wednesday (I October). Malcolm Dodds, area manager for the North East and North Yorkshire region. says:-1 was aware of only two artics taking part in the go-slow which had been called by Andrew Spence, leader of the People's Fuel Lobby. to begin at 8.30am."

Dodds believes hauliers stayed away because "they have learned from previous protests that they lose money if they take part and it also affects their relationships with customers. There have not been many calls to us asking us if protests are planned."

But Spence, who Dodds says has -lost credibility amongst hauliers", defended the go-slow: "It went very well.At the various parts of the Al where the action was being held there were well over 50 vehicles taking part. What we have done is raise the profile of these taxes once again. As for the next step all I can say is, watch this space."

• Farmers plan to maintain their blockade of dairies this week after rejecting an offer to raise the price paid for milk by less than 1p/lit as "totally inadequate".

Farmers' groups have already apologised to hauliers who hay( been caught up in the blockades and have called on them to joii the campaign.

David Handley, chairman o Farmers for Action, says: "It' become increasingly clear to u through talking to hauliers thi week just how poorly they at being paid as well.

"If they would join with us i: putting pressure on the dairie maybe we could do something fu the both of us:he adds.
