Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TNT drivers angered by 'unfair' bonus scheme. Guy Sheppard reports.

TNT LOGISTICS has angered scores of drivers by introducing a bonus scheme that is worth nearly four times more in one part of the country than another.

Bonus payments on its contract with Rugby Cement, designed to stop drivers quitting for betterpaid jobs, range from £4 to £15 a day. T&G shop steward Key Welton says more than 80 drivers at his depot in South Ferriby near Hull and another depot near Goole receive the lowest bonus.

-They [TNT] were having trouble retaining drivers on the hourly rate they were paying at Rugby because two or three supermarkets have regional distribution centres in the area." he explains. -Anyone who wants big money goes to them.

"Drivers at Rugby were already getting /8 a day anyway. But they increased Rugby by £7a-day and only offered us £4.The drivers felt they were being made a laughing stock.

Welton says the issue is nearing the end of TNT's grievance procedure if this fails drivers will be balloted on industrial action He adds that all the drivers are on £6.95/hr for a 39-hour week.

TNT says: "Like other employers in our industry, our terms ak conditions of employment dc reflect local employment condi. tions and always have done. Wc can't discuss individual cases."
