Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Every other week CM drops in on an unsuspecting dealer to see what's on offer and take a closer look at a truck on the forecourt.

Scania —king of the road. That ad campaign from a few years back was designed to highlight vehicles exactly like the one we're spotlighting this week for Taking Stock.

Operators looking to retain drivers could do no better than a Topline cab coupled with a frugal engine:what's more they hold their price.

The 4-Series has been about since 1996 and is the staple diet of the Scania used market in all its forms, from P-cabbed 18-tonne rigids to 6x2 tractors plated at 44 tonnes.

We targeted V535 LCA,which comes with a 420hp Euro-2 engine,14-speed gearbox, mid-lift and fixed fifth wheel, which is lighter but less versatile than the slider. During its four years on the road it's clocked up 490,000km.

Keltruck general sales manager David Morgan picked up four Scania R124LTopline 6x2 tractors in Reg Jefferies of ()Hey livery from Malcolm Harrison and he's already sold the other three, so you'd better get in quick if this one takes your fancy.

There's a three-month warranty on all vehicles leaving the premises backed by Warranty Holdings, and up to 12 months' cover is available at extra cost.

Close examination suggested this example had been well cared for.The bottom step on the driver's door dropped down with a bit of a clunk, but it's seen a lot of action. There was no damage on the lead-up ramps and the wheel covers were clean, suggesting that this tractor had not swapped many trailers — or they were swapped correctly, using the air bags.

No service history was available, but those documents can be misleading unless a vehicle has a fully documented repair and maintenance contract.

Signs of wear were restricted to a couple al worn patches on the driver's seat by the door the cab also rocked a little when we set off from a standing start.

Driving

The gearbox was a bit unfriendly at first but once it warmed up it worked smoothly enough. David Morgan told us it had just been treated to new oil so it's possible that it had yet to reach all the parts an oil should reach.

The clutch was sharp and acceleration was clean which gave us the impression that the driveline was still in its prime. Once the gearbox started to co-operate we found that the short throw was still tight, although the barrier to the left to the crawlers and reverse didn't offer much resistance.

Reg Jefferies of Otley obviously has an effective maintenance regime because there are plenty of rough four-year-olds on the market. Overall mileage is not excessive.

Bottom line

As we all know, if there isn't enough to go around, demand will push the price up. Cap's -etail price for this truck is £29,501:1(ex-VAT) while Keltruck is asking £37,000.1s demand .hat high for a four-year-old truck? We'll have :o wait and see, but V535 LCA is clean and has full MoT.

As always with a Scania, if you won't pay the m-ice some else probably will. •
