Brake alarm
The Transport Association has called on truck manufacturers to fit tractor unit handbrake alarms. These will prevent drivers getting out of their vehicles with the handbrake off to avoid injuries and deaths caused by runaway vehicles.
Denigrating duty
Tory MP John Redwood has slammec the fuel duty increase and its effect on the haulage industry Speaking at the opening of trailer manufacturer Don-Bur's factory extension he said he is also keen to see the introduction of a 'Brit Disc' levy on foreign trucks coming into the UK.
Southfields' crisis
Southfields. the Nottingham based bodybuilder, has gone into administration. Production at its Langa plant was split 50:50 between trailers and rigid bodywork. Southfields also had a partnership with German trailer manufacturer Krone. The company employs 75 people and had sales of E9m last year.
Congestion call
The Confederation of British Industry is lobbying the government to replace road tax and fuel duty with a national system of congestion charging.
Tippennan jailed
A builder who crashed his tipper into an ambulance then drove off has been jailed for a year by Maidstone Crown Court. Jamie Chaney pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop and fairing to report an accident.
