Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ON PAGE 8 of last week's issue (CM 2 October) you reported that foreign hauliers are carrying more "cabotage" freight than ever before. This is because fuel is more expensive here than in Europe because of high duty. Foreign hauliers have a competitive edge just by arriving at Dover with a full fuel tank.

Perhaps the government could create a level playing field for British hauliers by lowering duty on fuel for commercial operators.

But what do they do? They put it up. Even worse, they put it up in the same week that the French drop their duty rate even further.

Well done CM for badgering Downing Street about just how much this costs and how unfair it is. If the government actually listens you will have done the haulage industry a huge favour. Tony Parry West Wickham
