THE GROWING importance of women in the transport industry was recognised last week by this year's Women in Transport Awards.

More than 50 women entered the competition. run by Iveco and the Road Haulage Association, which is designed to highlight their role in what is still seen as a male-dominated industry.

Angi Robinson of East Transportation won the Administrative Excellence category. Since taking over as the firm's transport manager three years ago she has managed cut costs every year. "I am both surprised and pleased," she says, "but if it wasn't for the drivers I wouldn't be here."

Operational Excellence awards for women employed in hands-on roles went to Fran Daley of Gist's Thatcham depot and Nicky Facey of Interoute Transport Services, who drives a milk tanker.

The Owner Operator Excellence category was won by Paddy Laban of Laban Transport. After passing her Class 1 test at the age of 52 she is still driving trucks at the age of 67.

"My husband ran a haulage business while I worked market stall, but it was ah. my ambition to drive a tr up and down the motorw she explains.
