Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Recovery operator hits out at Green Flag. Jennifer Ball reports.

A CUMBRIAN recovery operator has branded Green Flag "irresponsiblefor asking it to carry out work which it says cannot be completed safely -and it has been warned that it risks losing its contract if it turns down more than 1% of Green Flag work.

George Graham from Carlislebased Auto Recoveries claims the breakdown group has made an issue of his company turning down more than 1% of work. He argues that when his firm has refused work it has been because no driver was available who could do the job safely and within the domestic driving rules.

In a letter to the company, Green Flag says:"Unless there is a substantial improvement regarding refusals within the next six weeks it may leave us no alternative but to find a replacement operator to cover the Green Flag work in your area" Graham, who sits on the Association of Vehicle Recovery Operators' standards safety committee, has written to Green Flag about his concerns, particularly in the light of proposals to introduce corporate killing legislation.

He writes: "We will never be forced into a position that would place our employees or your members in potential danger [through] requesting exhausted staff/drivers to transport your members on long-distance recoveries.

"Utilising part-time staff is even more hazardous, as we would have no knowledge of the activities that they might have been involved in preceding our using their services.

"The last thing we want in this industry is for injuries or a fatality resulting from driver's fatigue.he emphasises.

A spokesman for Green Flag had no comment except that it will be considering the letter.
