Farmer does his bit for the parking crisis. Guy Sheppard reports.

A SUFFOLK farmer is investing LI:7m in developing a new HGV park, saying he can no longer earn a living from his traditional livelihood.

Karl Rout's farm diversification scheme will create a 220-space park within 10 miles of Felixstowe, where police are trying to boost HGV security (CM 12 June).

He is using farm employees to build and run the site, next to his farm at Nacton on the A14. Truckers will be charged around £10 a night including a £3 meal discount in the park's 160-seat restaurant. Other facilities include a bar.showers, 6ft perimeter fence and CCTV "We have visited other truck parks and have spoken to drivers about their requirements, says expig farmer Rout. "We visited The Stockyard near Rotherham twice because 80% of drivers said it is the best truck park around." He adds that the park, which will open in December, is badly needed following repeated complaints about overnight truck parking in local villages One of the nearest facilities for truckers is a cafe seven miles away at Copdock, but the local council banned overnight parking there following complaints from residents. Rout says the nearest truck park comparable to his is more than 70 miles away. -It seems strange having a huge container port like Felixstowe and then having no facilities for lorries when they get here," he adds.

Detective Sergeant Daye Goddard. Suffolk Police's local crime reduction officer, says Rout's investment is excellent news for hauliers: -Security of container loads is always an issue, especially for loads that have to be stood up overnight beyond Felixstowe Port perimeter.
