SHELL TANKER drivers fear that their pension rights could be threatened because the contract to haul the oil giant's products is changing hands.

Wincanton, which previously held the contract, has lost out to a combination of Hoyer, Suckling and Stillers in the bidding for its renewal. When the new contract starts drivers will be working for their third employer in as many years before Wincanton the contract was held by P&O Trans European.

There are nearly 500 drivers involved and the T&G confirms that there are fears about the transfer of terms and condi tions, including pension rights. A spokesman explains: "It's true that the drivers are concerned, but we are very much in the stage of talking to all the companies involved to establish what their intentions are."

One driver, who asked not to be named, says: "[It looks as though] we are going to get another employer. TUPE should cover us, but quite a few people are really worried about this."

Shell declined to comment on the drivers concerned, on the grounds that "pension arrangements for the drivers delivering fuel are a matter for their employer-.
