• Peter Hobbs and John Mills, sentenced to serve seven-and-ahalf years in a Bulgarian jail for smuggling 20.5kg of heroin, have had their convictions upheld in a retrial.

Hobbs' sister-in-law, Shirley, says both the men were given 14 days to appeal against the decision. But she has no way of knowing their plans as her phone calls have been barred.

Mills' girlfriend Dorothy Lawrence says her grief has turned to anger. She is also unsure whether Mills will appeal, but adds: "There is no way these guys did what they have been accused of."

The retrial was ordered by the Bulgarian authorities after faults had been discovered in the original trial, which was held in February 1996.
