• Aviation fuels for Australia's Alice Springs airport, and a large range of petroleum products for service stations and industrial users in the Northern Territory, are now being carried by Atkinson-powered road trains operated by the Shell Company of Australia. Total capacity of each train is 19,500 gallons.
Seven of these tanker trains are being used by Shell on the run between Darwin and Alice Springs—a return journey of nearly 2000 miles.
Each tractive unit is powered by a 355 hp Cummins turbocharged diesel fitted with a Jacobs engine brake. The gearbox is a 13-speed Fuller Roadranger unit and the axles were made by Kirkstall. Air conditioning is installed in the sleeper cab.
