Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

L"ROM the beginning of next year all internal carriage of cattle in England and

Wales will he done by road, as British Railways have decided that, from January 1, they will provide livestock services only from the ports of entry of Irish cattle to the 40 stations which will remain open for livestock. In Scotland a few domestic rail services will be retained, but the future of livestock transport North of the Border was due to be discussed this .week in Glasgow at a meeting in which the Road Haulage Association has strong representation.

Last month the R.H.A.'s livestock functional, group, agreed that hauliers should act as agents for clearing the cattle at the 40 stations, and the area livestock committees are being asked to draw up a .rates schedule so that all-in charges for point-to-point cattle movement can be quoted. Hauliers will notify the railways of the standard delivery charges for each area; the zones fed by road. from each rail livestock station will be large---in some cases covering four or five counties.

This switch of livestock traffic from rail to road is the first major result of the co-operative negotiations between R.H.A. and B.R.B., and the scheme has been welcomed by the N.F.U. NEWS IN BRIEF

Overtime Rates to Rise : The Road Haulage Wages Council met on Wednesday and agreed to recommend to the Minister of Labour that the proposals set out in R-H.(79) should be put into effect. These are that all week-day (Mon.-Fri,) overtime after the first two hours should be raised to time-and-a-half, and that Grade 2 should be abandoned as a pay area Bulk Liquid Rates: Because it was not possible to call a meeting of the R.H.A. bulk liquids group before September 29, the 5 per cent increase in rates which took effect for most hauliers on September 1 will not be applied by the bulk liquid carriers until November 1.

New T.R.T.A. Area: At an open meeting on October 1 in Worcester it was decided to form a Worcestershire area of the Traders Road Transport Association, the sixth in the West Midland division, A meeting is to be held to elect an area committee.
