Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Congestion in the city will get worse if a local councillor has his way — much to the concern of hauliers who will be affected. Chris Tindall reports.

A PETERBOROUGH councillor has demanded that haulage operators flouting a driving ban in the city arc reported to Eastern Traffic Commissioner Geoffrey Simms in a bid to have them thrown out of the industry.

Stephen Goldspink. the Conservative councillor for the Peterborough East ward, says LGV drivers have been ignoring a ban on vehicles over 7.5 tonnes driving down Oxney Road ever since it came into force in March.

A recent investigation carried out by the council found that 64 vehicles from 55 companies went down the road in one six-hour periodabout one every five minutes. Goldspink says the police arc too busy to enforce the regulation. so he has called for the TC to be made aware of companies that continue to break the rules instead.

However, he admits that by cracking down on these drivers he hopes freight traffic will be displaced onto another congested stretch of the city's ring road system -which would result in action finally beinQ taken by the local highways authority. "Either because of a lack of information or wilful wrongdoing or whatever. these vehicles are continuing to [flout the bag" he says."I can understand from a national haulage perspective it will take a while for it to sink in [but] some of those are locally based companies which should know better:' Adrian Watt. boss of Oxney Road industrial estate-based Crossacre. says that despite the fact it is costing his company between X70,000 and f.80,000 a year in extra fuel, his vehicles comply with the ban. Responding to Goldspink's admission that he wants to saturate the road network .Watt adds:'"Ihat's an incredible thing for a councillor to say.

-Ws destroying the local road network and he's certainly ruining local businesses," he adds. "It's completely wrong."
