• Proposals to privatise the Port of Dovii have been shelved, after Calais Chamber of Commerce emerged as the only Dotenti al buyer. Objections -rorri Dover Harbour Board led to a campaign featuring Dame Vera Lynn.
• A revised and updated Roadworthiness Guide is due to be published by the DOT in January. It is planned to waive the charge of £3, incorporating it into a package containing new continuous Operator Licensing guidelines.

• Business Post, the parcels and express mail company, has lifted profits by 59% in the halfyear to September. Pre-tax profits rose from £3.8m to 5.9m, thanks to improved transport efficiency.
• Manufacturing output fell by a seasonally adjusted 0.6% between August and September.
• A Vehicle inspectorate side check on 2 November netted more than 30 defective vehicles. The check on the A34 found six overweight vehicles. VI staff issued 15 defect notices, 10 delayed prohibitions and four immediate prohibitions.
• Central Railway is seeking permission for a scheme to transport trucks by rail from the Midlands to Calais via the Channel Tunnel by 2001. It says this could replace a million truck journeys a year.

• Environmental group r't lends of the Forth has checked pollution levels at two sites in London and says that PM10 particulate emissions are up to 81% higher than figures recorded by the Department of the Environment in 1994.
