Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Changes to the overall length of drawbar outfits proposed by the European Commission in October will NOT affect body lengths, says the EU.

The increase in overall vehicle lengths from 18.35m to 18.75m, due to become law on 1 January 1997, has been introduced to allow operators to use simpler couplings, instead of the complex hydraulic couplings currently used to maximise trailer decks, the extra 400mm will allow cheaper A-frames to be used.

Trailer manufacturers have been taking calls from customers unsure of which vehicles to order in the runup to implementation.

But EU officials have confirmed that the change will only apply to the gap between truck and trailer—actual body lengths will not be affected.
