• The Driving Standards Agency has set up an industry working party eirAtr, to draw up a scheme for the voluntary registration of LGV driving schools.
The move marks another step forward for Ci'Vfs campaign to regulate LGV driving schools.
Most members of the working party hope the voluntary scheme will lead to legislation: the car driving instructors' ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) scheme began on a voluntary basis in 1964 and became law in

1970. At present LGV driving instructors need only an LGV licence to teach driving.
The working party includes representatives from the Road Haulage and Distribution Training Council; Road Transport Industry Training Board Services; the Institute of LGV Driving Instructors; the Association of Vocational Driver Training Providers; and the National Training Federation. It has the support of Roads Minister Steven Norris who says: "We see a voluntary scheme as the first stage to addressing the problem." (CM 6-12 July).
