Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

1 READ with interest your editorial (CM, October 19), on the subject of motorway accidents and fog.

Having spent the last 20 years covering in excess of 25,000 miles each year and having recently moved to the London area and becoming involved in the daily pilgrimage along either the M4 or M3, 1 am now of the opinion that your comment relative to the majority of British drivers being congenital idiots is uncomfortably close to the truth.

The speed at which people travel in relation to distance between vehicles, is simply too fast, and therefore in normal conditions accidents are inevitable; add a bit of fog and a normal journey becomes a nightmare. If you leave a safe gap between your vehicle and the one in front, it is immediately filled by the motorway dodgem driver.

Irrespective of any new safety measures that could be introduced and welcomed, the basic fact remains: The majority of motorway users drive with little consideration for themselves or fellow road users.
