THE BID by Sealink British Ferries to build twin-bore tunnels between Dover and Calais (page 6) assumes that 50 per cent of day trippers will travel by coach.
Coaches would not be assessed for tolls — only the passengers at £8 each per single trip; the driver would travel free.
Coach passenger traffic is estimated to grow at six per cent a year till the year 20110. In 1984, traffic on routes between South East England and the range of ports from Ostend to Boulogne amounted to: coach passengers, single trips, 5.2 million.
